After one brief use, people discard plastic straws. Small and lightweight, these single-use straws are a huge hazard to wildlife and the environment on which we depend. In fact, 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute the world’s beaches, exposing sea turtles, fish, and other marine wildlife to great danger.
Enter the reusable drinking straw, one of the easiest ways to reduce plastic waste. While shifting to sustainable straws may seem insignificant to others, it’s a good place to start.

Cypress Straws
Cypress Straws provides reusable glass straws to help lessen the use of disposable ones. The business aims to help ease the pressure that single-use plastics put on our environment – it’s a creative, little solution to massive plastic problems! It’s a start towards making a change.
For the owners, Hannah and Jimmy Clements, Cypress Straws is more of a platform that raises awareness rather than an entrepreneurial channel.
Their goal is to have a company that allows them to work together to change the way people see their roles in the environment.
“We knew we wanted to start a business together that would actually make a difference. So that’s how Cypress Straws was born.”
It’s no secret that plastic straws are among the top 10 plastic debris found during coastal clean-ups. When there’s a crisis taking place in the world, it’s understandable to feel like there’s not much they can do to help that will make a difference.
Jimmy, however, says, “That’s why we work to promote small changes that eventually compound into a much greater shift.”
Who knows, even the smallest act can make a huge impact!
Packaging journey with Packola
“Our packaging journey is a whole other conversation.”
Packaging accounted for about 36% of all plastics manufactured.
In the early phases of Cypress Straw’s packaging journey, Hannah and Jimmy felt conflicted with other packaging companies because they are not eco-friendly. “We didn’t want to be part of the very problem that we were trying to solve,” says Jimmy.
Good thing they discovered Packola.
“Packola allowed us to create customized boxes with small enough dimensions to fit our straws without producing excessive waste. Packola’s packaging is as eco-friendly as possible while still being able to deliver our products safely.”
With Packola, Cypress Straws’ custom product boxes become more sustainable, functional, and cost-effective than ever. With naturally occurring and sustainably sourced materials, Packola offers sustainable packaging tailored to each business’ specific needs.
What’s in it for Hannah & Jimmy
As sustainability advocates, Hannah and Jimmy saw Cypress Straws as a way to make an impact and give back to the community.
Since their families are from Florida Panhandle, the couple is very familiar with the devastation caused by ocean pollutants such as the BP oil spill, microplastics, cigarettes, and rouge fishing nets.
Cypress Straws’ mission is to raise awareness of the overwhelming plastic pollution problem in the ocean. The couple is confident and hopeful that as a community, they can continue to inspire more positive change.
